A Note to New Writers

Believe in yourself and your own gifts. Keep in mind that the challenge for every writer is twofold-to have something to say and to have the mastery of the craft to say it well.

Study and practice plotting, pacing, point of view, etc. so you can express exactly what you want to say. Nothing is more important than being true to your own artistic vision and understanding the requirements of the medium you have chosen to express it, whether you are writing a symphony, a haiku or a novel. Keep in mind that in imitating other writers you can only be second rate at being them. Expressing your own inner thoughts, feelings, and stories in your own way is the only path to real success. Your world, your history, your experiences, your insights cannot be duplicated by anyone else.

Bring us in to share your vision, your imagination. No one can do it better than you can because the truth of your uniqueness is what you are here to offer everyone else. It is what moves us and takes us outside of our own lives when we read what you have written.

Our Idea of a Dream Client

One who participates in a mutually respectful business relationship, is clear about needs and goals and communicates about career planning. If we know what you need and want, we can help you to achieve it. A dream client has a storytelling gift, a commitment to a writing career, a desire to learn and grow, and a passion for excellence. We want clients who are expressing their own unique voice and truly have something of their own to communicate. This client understands that many people have to work together for a book to succeed and that everything in publishing takes far longer than one imagines. Trust and communcation are truly essential. How wonderful that so many of my clients are dream clients.

Improving Your Chances For Success

In both fiction and nonfiction we seek books that works in every aspect.
These books are:
  1. Physically — well constructed, and well written.
  2. Emotionally — evocative, they really make you laugh, cry, turn the pages, get inspired.
  3. Mentally — well thought out, with thought-provoking ideas and insights that stick with readers.
  4. Spiritually — developed in terms of whole characters, content, or style.

In nonfiction, the author's passionate belief in the subject as well as expertise and a defined audience are appealing. We seek a client who is willing to listen, learn and work hard to succeed. If there are writing problems, I will get this author help to produce a salable proposal.

In fiction, a wonderful, fresh authorial voice, a page-turning plot that really does keep me up at night after a long day, well-structured chapters and imaginative prose will result in an offer of representation. A writer needs to pull me into another point of view and another world I don't want to leave. In fiction, the writing is everything. We are glad to encourage and work with promising writers who still need to master aspects of the craft of writing.

Note that there are separate guidelines for submitting fiction and nonfiction work to this agency. Read these guidelines carefully before sending your work to enhance your chances of success.
